Remedial Programs

For the most part, remedial education programs have not been successful. Most of the students who enter remedial education remain there. To use a medical analogy, they do not get well (educationally). This is because remedial education rarely diagnoses learning abilities, but rather concentrates almost exclusively on trying to impart academic skills about “teaching around” disabilities.

SOI has a different approach. We want to know why the students are not succeeding. We are looking for the cause of problem so we can find a remedy. Assessment is the key to making a diagnosis that leads to effective treatment, and we are able to do this thanks to our IPP framework.

When learning disabilities are due to a lack of perceptual and cognitive learning abilities, we need to ask the following questions:

• Why is the student failing – what abilities are lacking?
• How can we develop the abilities?
• How can a school do this for all students?
• How can we provide true remediation?
